Services

Ambulance Service

PA Licensed EMS ProviderNorthern EMS provides Basic and Advanced Life Support ambulance service to all or parts of eight municipalities. Northern EMS also provides ALS paramedic services to a large portion of neighboring Bedford County. (See map)

Northern EMS currently staffs and operates one Advanced Life Support (ALS) crew on a 24 hour a day basis. This crew handles approximately 1300 responses each year.

Northern EMS currently employs approximately 25 paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), both full-time and part-time/per-diem.

Our EMTs are trained to assess a patient's condition, maintain a patient's airway, breathing, and circulation, control external bleeding, prevent shock, and prevent further injury or disability by immobilizing potential spinal or other bone fractures. In addition to the skills performed by EMTs, our paramedics are trained to perform more advanced skills such as in-depth patient assessments, advanced airway maintenance such as intubation, cardiac monitoring, defribrillation and cardioversion, vascular access such as an IV, and drug administration.

To insure high standards of care, our staff are expected to maintain skills requirements and attend several in-house trainings, in addition to meeting the continuing education requirements set forth by the PA Department of Health. Northern EMS also utilizes an extensive Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) Program that includes peer, supervisor, and physician review.

Northern EMS utilizes a fleet of two fully-equipped ambulances that include some of latest technology, including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, c-pap, and capnography.

Continuing Education

Continuing education (CE) for prehospital personnel is defined in Pennsylvania's EMS regulations as “those learning activities intended to build upon the education and experiential basis of prehospital EMS personnel for the enhancement of practice, education, administration, research or theory development, to strengthen the quality of care provided.” CE is a method used by many prehospital healthcare professionals to maintain licensure or certification.

Northern EMS is an accredited continuing education sponsor. Continuing education sponsors are entities that apply to the Pennsylvania Department of Health to become a sponsor of continuing education (CE) courses. Accreditation as a CE sponsor is valid for a three-year period and enables us to sponsor continuing education courses in-house for the convenience of our staff.
